Baylor first baseman Tyce Armstrong etched, or better yet mashed, his name into the NCAA record books, hitting three grand slams on Opening Day of the 2026 college baseball season.
It takes decades worth of college baseball archives to find the last player to accomplish this feat. Armstrong is the second DI player ever to produce that statline, the first since Louisville’s Jim LaFountain in 1976.

The historic performance led the Bears to a 15-2 drubbing over New Mexico State at Baylor Ballpark’s Magnolia Field.
The party started in the third inning. On a 2-2 count, Armstrong went down in the zone to crush a no-doubter to left field, giving Baylor a 5-0 lead.
The redshirt senior didn’t waste much time on collecting the second one either. Coming back up to the plate in the fourth, the UT Arlington transfer took a trip back to left field to up the Bears’ lead to 9-0.

Armstrong struck out in the sixth inning with runners on first and second, but his day wasn’t over just yet. With the help of three walks, two hit-by-pitches and a fielder’s choice, another at-bat arose.
And he didn’t disappoint.
The video game-like day turned supernatural, as the redshirt senior hammered his third grand slam over the left field wall to end the game, due to run rule. Matching LaFountain’s ‘unbreakable’ record 50 years prior, Armstrong celebrated with his teammates outside their dugout, donning the team’s celebratory firefighter helmet.
Opening Day featured a collection of mesmerizing moments across the country, but nothing close to what happened in Waco, TX.
