The Cincinnati Reds are signing free agent slugger Nathaniel Lowe to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training, according to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand and Mark Sheldon.

Lowe became a free agent after he was designated for assignment by the Boston Red Sox in November. Boston effectively moved on from Lowe after trading for St. Louis Cardinals first baseman/designated hitter Willson Contreras, but the 30-year-old had lingered on the free agent market ever since.

Now he’ll join a Reds team that tentatively has 22-year-old Sal Stewart penciled in to play first base this season, and free agent pickup Eugenio Suarez at designated hitter.
Lowe slashed .228/.307/.381 in 153 games last season for the Red Sox and Washington Nationals.
The Nationals released him in August after their season went into a tailspin. Lowe was hitting just .216 with 16 home runs at the time, but saw his numbers improve markedly in Boston.
Despite slashing .280/.370/.420 in his final 34 games of the season, Lowe found himself back on the free agent market one year after he was traded by the Texas Rangers for left-handed reliever Robert Garcia.
Now Lowe returns to the National League, where he’ll have a chance to hit in one of baseball’s most hitter-friendly home parks in Cincinnati.
Financial details of the contract have yet to be reported.
