On Friday, the Toronto Blue Jays traded for outfielder Jesus Sanchez from the Houston Astros in a swap for fellow outfielder Joey Loperfido.

Sanchez is now headed to his third team in his career after he was traded to the Astros mid-season from the Miami Marlins last season, where he had spent the first four full seasons of his career.

Bringing in Sanchez provides the Blue Jays with a veteran presence they couldn’t receive from Loperfido last season in left field, while also giving them improved slugging ability as the right fielder hit for 14 home runs and 48 RBIs on a .237 batting average.

Sanchez spoke to the media late Saturday morning and gave his thoughts on his new team.

“I know the team is a competitive team, it’s a team that has always been giving their best. So, when I found out, I felt extremely happy.”

The excitement from Sanchez is justified, considering the Blue Jays are coming off a World Series appearance and were only a couple of innings away from knocking off the juggernaut in the Los Angeles Dodgers, and as the team is coming in with an expectation to get back to the big stage, bringing in Sanchez could prove to be what the team needs to get over the hump.

Although the team lost their all-star and long-term third baseman, Bo Bichette, they still had a solid offseason, bringing in starting pitcher Dylan Cease and the major Japanese prospect, Kazuma Okamoto, who many believed to be Bichette’s replacement anyway.

Toronto has tasted defeat on the biggest stage in baseball, and acquisitions such as those signings and Friday’s trade, the team is putting in a great effort to ensure that does not happen the next time around.
