Detroit Pistons star Cade Cunningham has purchased a minority stake in MLB’s Texas Rangers, he told ESPN’s Shams Charania on Thursday.

Cunningham was born in Arlington, which is where the Rangers play. He went to Bowie High School in Arlington before joining Florida’s famed Montverde Academy and eventually Oklahoma State for his one season in college. The Pistons selected him No. 1 overall at the 2021 NBA draft.

In July he threw out the first pitch at a Rangers game:

Athletes purchasing minority shares in professional teams is becoming something of a trend. Venus and Serena Williams own a minority share in the Miami Dolphins. Vince Carter, Tracy McGrady and Jozy Altidore are minority owners in the Buffalo Bills. Patrick Mahomes owns minority stakes in the Kansas City Royals and Sporting KC. Magic Johnson holds ownership stakes with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Washington Commanders, Los Angeles Sparks, LAFC, Washington Spirit and esports franchise Team Liquid. And the list goes on.

Now you can add Cunningham to it.

On the court, the 24-year-old is having a fantastic season for the Pistons, averaging 25.3 points, 9.6 assists and 5.6 rebounds per game. Detroit is 40-14 and has the second-best record in the entire NBA, trailing only the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder (42-13).
