The New York Yankees are leaving no stone unturned when it comes to finding talent.

Their latest signing comes from the country of Hungary. It’s an unprecedented move.

According to the New York Daily News’ Gary Phillips, there’s never been a player born and raised in Hungary to sign with an MLB team, until now.

The signing is 16-year old Marko Morua.

Morua is a catcher as part of the international signing class of 2026.

The signing is reportedly for “more than half a million dollars.”

It’s a fascinating development in a number of ways, including because it was reported midway through 2025 that Morua had an agreement in place to end up with the San Diego Padres. Evidently, that changed.

Morua is the grandson of Antonio Morua, a Cuban who was one of the founding fathers of baseball in Hungary.

Marko Morua was training in the Dominican Republic as his signing year approached, which helped him get on the radar of MLB teams.

Morua played in the 2025 U-18 European Championship qualifiers for Hungary, putting up a 1.640 OPS that earned the Hungarian team a spot in this year’s actually continental championship tournament for his age group.

His older brother is a pitcher, Martin. Two years older, he could also end up getting a chance in an MLB organization at some point.

For now, it’s Marko Morua joining the Yankees’ system in a never-before-seen move involving Hungary.
