EDINBURG, Tex. (WIBW) – KU baseball didn’t get it’s season off to the best start on Friday, but the Jayhawks bounced back with wins on Saturday and Sunday to start their season with a series win.
Jordan Bach belted a home run in the top of the first inning on Friday to begin KU’s season in style, but the Jayhawks only scored 3 more runs from that point. Kansas ace Dom Voegele struggled in his season debut, allowing 5 runs (all earned) in 3 innings pitched. Voegele walked 4 batters while striking out 8. KU lost, 7-4.
The Jayhawks used a 6-run 6th inning on Saturday to pick up their first win of the season. Catcher Augusto Mungarrieta gave KU a 9-1 lead with a 3-run homer to highlight the rally. Kansas went on to win, 10-3.
KU came back from behind on Sunday, scoring a pair of runs in the 8th inning to turn a 7-6 deficit into an 8-7 lead. Caleb Deer struck out the side in the 9th inning to seal the win.
The Jayhawks will remain in Texas for one more game, a Wednesday evening matchup against Lamar in Beaumont.
