Having some top-tier prospects in the organization is something the Chicago Cubs are used to. Whether it be being able to use the prospect capital to be reinforcements for the major-league club or trading prospects to get MLB talent, the Cubs have the depth to do either. One pitcher in their farm system has been named as one of the top prospects entering this upcoming season. Let’s take a closer look at who he is and what made him get this level of recognition.

The Cubs continue to see their prospects get some recognition ahead of the 2026 season, as Fangraphs released its Top 100 Prospects list. Starting pitcher Jaxon Wiggins was 72nd on the list and has shown the ability to be a force. With a four-pitch arsenal (fastball, slider, changeup, curveball) and the ability to reach 100 MPH, he is an intriguing prospect. Below is a snippet of what they said about Wiggins’ potential:

“If you’re looking for candidates to be 2026 Jacob Misiorowski, Wiggins is one of them. If a competitive Cubs team needs a healthy arm, he could come up and just try to survive for five-ish innings at a time by leaning on his fastball, but he’s still prey raw as a craftsman and would likely have some developmental growing pains as he hones his breaking ball command. He has no. 3 starter ceiling and a realistic floor as a knockout reliever.”

Wiggins was drafted in the second round of the 2023 MLB Draft by the Cubs out of Arkansas. He would pitch at three different levels in 2024, but missed last year due to Tommy John surgery. He pitched 19 games (18 starts) and was 3-4 with a 2.19 ERA and 97 strikeouts over 78.0 innings. It will be intriguing to see how he develops throughout the season coming off a major injury.
