Paul Skenes knows what Konnor Griffin is going through.
Two years ago, Skenes was considered one of the best prospects in baseball and a potential savior of the Pittsburgh Pirates. He immediately lived up to the hype after debuting at age 21, winning NL Rookie of the Year honors in his first season and unanimous NL Cy Young honors in his second.
He hasn’t gotten much offensive help during that time, but that could be about to change if Konnor Griffin reaches his superstar potential.
Griffin, MLB’s top prospect, is only 19 years old. However, he’s already impressed Skenes and others with his remarkable maturity and work ethic.

“I think it’s funny that everything I see of him has to clarify that he’s 19 years old, because you wouldn’t think that,” Skenes told reporters last week. “Super mature, super professional in how he goes about his business. Talking to him, it doesn’t say 19-year-old when you interact with him. It’s gonna be fun. I’m excited to see his development. Excited to have him help us win a lot of games in Pittsburgh this year.”

Like Griffin, Skenes was also a first-round draft pick, so he understands the pressure that comes with that and having to deal with high expectations.
“He’s built for it,” Skenes said of his future teammate. “He’s a pro, so he’ll be fine.”

The Pirates hope so. They’re counting on him to anchor their lineup for a long time, possibly as soon as this year.
