THE GAMES: The Angels lost, 4-1, to the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday at Tempe Diablo Stadium while the other half of the team lost, 7-5, to the Colorado Rockies at Salt River Fields in Scottsdale. The Angels have lost four of their first five Cactus League games.

PITCHING REPORT: In Tempe, right-hander Grayson Rodriguez was charged with one run in 1⅔ innings in his spring debut. Rodriguez walked three, and he threw only 23 strikes among his 40 pitches. Rodriguez, who has been out with injuries since July 2024, attributed the wildness to the emotions of returning to the mound. “I was pretty excited out there,” he said. “Next game we’re going to be a little more dialed in.” Rodriguez averaged 96 mph and topped out at 99 mph with his fastball. … Right-hander Kirby Yates gave up an unearned run. … Left-hander Drew Pomeranz worked around a walk in a scoreless inning. … Right-hander Jordan Romano retired the side in order.  … Right-hander Chase Shores, who was the Angels’ second-round draft pick last summer, pitched a perfect inning, hitting 99 mph with his fastball. He retired Bryce Eldridge, one of the top hitting prospects in baseball. Right-hander Nate Snead, the Angels’ third-round pick last year, followed with a perfect ninth. He hit 101 mph. “I thought they were great,” Manager Kurt Suzuki said. “It looked like they were pretty under control. I know they were amped up, but they were under control, like they’ve been there before.” … In Scottsdale, right-hander Jack Kochanowicz gave up one run in 1⅔ innings. He allowed three hits. … Right-hander Victor Mederos gave up two runs on five hits in 1⅓ innings. … Right-hander José Fermin pitched a perfect inning, with two strikeouts.

HITTING REPORT: In Tempe, the Angels did not have a baserunner in the first two innings against Giants ace Logan Webb. The Angels first hit was an Omar Martinez single in the fifth. … Oswald Peraza drove in the Angels’ only run with a single in the eighth. … Mike Trout was hitless in three at-bats, with two pop-ups and a groundout. … In Scottsdale, Logan O’Hoppe drove in two runs with a triple. … The Angels trailed by four runs in the eighth and then scored three runs, one on a Nelson Rada single and two on a Wade Meckler triple. … The Angels hit into double plays in each of the first three innings.

DEFENSE REPORT: In Tempe, third baseman Yoán Moncada made a sliding stop of a ground ball. He also had a ground ball tick off his glove in the fifth inning, for an error. He’s been shaky in two games defensively so far. … Catcher Travis d’Arnaud was wrong on two challenges in the first three innings, using up the Angels’ allotment for the game.
