The Brenham Cubettes came close to a district-opening comeback on Tuesday night, but had to settle for a 5-4 loss to College Station at Alumni Field.
After College Station scored the first four runs in the top of the third, Brenham got to within a run during a three-run fourth frame. Second baseman Jacee Hegar kickstarted the Cubette comeback attempt with a two-RBI base hit into center field. She advanced to third base on a College Station error with one out on the board.
Shortstop Ali Tiemann did her job with a bunt single to bring Hegar home and make it a 4-3 game.
Another Lady Cougar error in the fifth inning allowed Brenham to tie the game. A hard-hit ground ball from sophomore pitcher Laityn Davis’s bat induced a mistake that allowed right fielder Sandra Prieto to score.
College Station scored its fifth run on an RBI double into center field from sophomore Kenslee Palasota.
Brenham took its one-run deficit into the bottom of the seventh inning, where senior third baseman McKenzie Tiemann and sophomore center fielder Aldyn Jaks hit singles on back-to-back pitches. Tiemann was called out on offensive interference, though, for the second out.
A ground out to third base ended the game.
No Cubette recorded multiple hits on Tuesday, but five players tallied one hit each. Senior first baseman Kylie Baker drew two walks while Davis added Brenham’s third walk.
Davis took the loss in the circle after pitching the first 3 1/3 innings. She allowed five hits and walks along with four runs while striking out two College Station batters.
Baker pitched the final 3 2/3 innings and earned seven strikeouts. She gave up just two hits, one run and one walk.
Brenham will return to action at 6 p.m. on Friday at Alumni Field for a non-district game against Waller. The Cubettes will celebrate the 30-year anniversary of their 1996 Class 4A state championship team.
