The College of the Ozarks (C of O) baseball team showcased both dominant pitching and timely offense in Saturday’s doubleheader against Graceland University, earning a strong win in the opener before falling just short in a 5-4 heartbreaker in Game 2.

In the first game, the Bobcats leaned on precise pitching and clutch hitting to take control early and never look back. After a scoreless start, C of O seized momentum in the third inning and steadily built its lead. The combination of disciplined at-bats and efficient work on the mound proved decisive.

Northwestern struggled to solve Jennings’ command throughout the contest. The starter delivered a two-hit shutout, setting the tone from the outset and keeping opposing hitters off balance. Behind him, the Bobcats capitalized on key opportunities, stringing together timely hits that allowed them to create separation on the scoreboard. The victory highlighted the team’s balance, standout pitching paired with opportunistic offense and provided valuable early-season momentum.

Game 2 unfolded in a dramatically different fashion.

The Bobcats jumped out to a 3-0 lead by the fourth inning behind right-hander George Reynolds and a sharp offensive start. Alex Nimmo ignited the scoring in the third, singling and later crossing the plate for a 1-0 advantage. In the fourth, Brody Tyler delivered a run-scoring double, and Aaron Fisher followed with an RBI double to stretch the lead to three runs.

Reynolds was dominant for much of the afternoon. Over seven innings, he struck out 11 batters while allowing six hits and four walks across 126 pitches. He kept Graceland scoreless until the fourth inning, when Gabriel Perez delivered a two-RBI single to trim the lead to 3-2. Reynolds settled back in and carried a narrow advantage into the late innings.

The Bobcats added what appeared to be a crucial insurance run in the top of the seventh. Fisher, who finished 2-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI, reached base and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Landon Jones to give C of O a 4-2 cushion. The Bobcats totaled seven hits, including three doubles; stole three bases; and played flawless defense behind their pitching staff.

But Graceland responded quickly.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Yellowjackets tied the game on a two-run single from Rafael Calcano. The momentum shift carried into the eighth inning, when Drake Matney delivered the go-ahead RBI single to put Graceland in front, 5-4. Reliever Juan Guzman closed out the ninth to secure the comeback victory.

Both teams finished with seven hits, but Graceland applied steady pressure with five stolen bases and four walks. The Bobcats struck out 12 times and left four runners on base, narrowly missing additional scoring opportunities.

Despite the setback, C of O displayed encouraging signs: Reynolds’ electric start, Fisher’s extra-base power and disciplined situational hitting from Jones. With a balanced offensive attack and reliable pitching performances, the Bobcats look poised to build on their strong early-season foundation as they aim to turn tight contests into wins in the weeks ahead.
