A proposed MLB salary cap could change baseball in the future, and the top team affected would likely be the reigning World Series champions.
The Los Angeles Dodgers have become a dominant force that have assembled a historic lineup in recent seasons. However, the defending World Series winners may have to enjoy their massive success while it lasts.
According to insider Jon Heyman, baseball is proposing an MLB salary cap set around $260 to $280 million. That number marks a drastic change for teams that regularly spend much more on their annual squads, including the Dodgers.

Entering the 2026 MLB season, Los Angeles is set to allocate over $417 million to its star-studded squad. The Dodgers feature many massive names like Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman and more.
Last season, Dave Roberts’ team outspent every MLB team by at least $71 million, including the second biggest investors New York Mets. The Dodgers were the only team with a luxury tax of over $400 million, per Spotrac.
However, the proposed changes by MLB would draw a hard line for Los Angeles, as well as other big-spending franchises like the Mets, New York Yankees and Philadelphia Phillies.
Meanwhile, Heyman’s reporting also indicates that a salary floor of nearly $140 million will be likely as well to ensure that franchises are keeping up with the big spenders.

In 2025, 11 teams had luxury tax spending of lower than that $140 million mark, including the Cleveland Guardians and Miami Marlins. With most other American sports leagues utilizing a salary cap system for decades, like NFL, NHL and NBA, baseball appears close to finally implementing a similar strategy.
