MLB Network analyst Harold Reynolds knows firsthand how one player can transform a ballclub.

The former All-Star and Gold Glove winner spent 10 seasons with the Seattle Mariners from 1983 to 1992. In 1988, the team was terrible, finishing 25 games below .500.

The following year, Ken Griffey Jr. arrived and changed everything.

With Griffey leading the way, the Mariners improved every season from 1989 to 1991 before becoming one of the best teams of the decade.

Now, Reynolds foresees MLB’s top prospect, Konnor Griffin, having a similar impact on the Pittsburgh Pirates.

“It’s almost like I’m seeing deja vu all over again,” Reynolds said on MLB Network’s “Hot Stove” show on Wednesday. “I’m seeing this with Konnor Griffin. This club needs to be infused with some talent. He’s ready…This is an advanced hitter for 19 years old. I don’t care if he’s 25. The kid is ready to play in the big leagues.”

“We’re looking at a generational player in Konnor Griffin,” Reynolds added later in the segment. “I’ve been around long enough to know what I see.”

The Pirates haven’t had a winning season since 2018 or made the playoffs since 2015. They’re desperate for a contender, and Griffin can help get them there.
