Missouri opened up its stadium for the first time this season for the Mizzou Invitational on Friday in Columbia. The Tigers split matchups going 1-1 against opponents they’ll see again this weekend.
Missouri 12, Wichita State 4 (6)
Two home runs in three batters from Sophie Smith and Sidney Forrester, plus a run from Abby Hay, gave Mizzou six runs to take a 6-3 lead in the bottom of the fourth.
Stefania Abruscato singled deep to right field in the fifth to bring in two more runners. Smith, Forrester, Hay and Addy Waits all scored in the sixth to lock in the 12-4 run-rule win for the Tigers.
Mizzou impressed defensively, showing off with a quick double play by Smith and Hay to close the top of the first inning.
Emma Jackson had her 150th career hit in the bottom of the fourth to advance Hay to second.
Cierra Harrison pitched 5.1 innings allowing five hits and the four runs the Shockers scored. Abby Carr slotted in to relieve Harrison and secured the final two outs in just seven pitches.
Miami (Ohio) 5, Missouri 1
The Tigers couldn’t stay hot falling in their second matchup of the day.
Freshman Linny Ramsey was the lone scorer for Mizzou. She also secured her first hit of her collegiate career in her first three at bats.
Miami took the lead 2-0 with a home run in the third inning. The Redhawks then doubled down in the fifth adding three more runs to their lead.
Marissa McCann pitched a complete game allowing eight hits and five runs.
Despite the loss to Miami, hitting was a huge factor in Friday’s games. Mizzou coach Larissa Anderson gave input on the amount of runs for both game.Â
“It comes down to that person that’s in the batter’s box at that time,” Anderson said. “We got to continue to get on base any way we possibly can… just bear down a little bit more when we have those opportunities to not let them pass by.”
Mizzou will move on in the Mizzou Invitational to play Drake at 3 p.m. Friday at the Mizzou Softball Stadium.
