The Brewers chased Reds starter Hunter Greene before he could even record an out, racking up five straight hits against the right-hander. Milwaukee went on to score four times in the first inning, with Greene returning to pitch the second and complete his day.

Andrew Vaughn led the Brewers (4-5) with a 3-for-3 day at the plate.

“We had some good at-bats early,” said manager Pat Murphy. “Did some good things, but always room for improvement.”

Coleman Crow made his second spring appearance and first start, allowing a home run to Matt McLain two batters in but otherwise throwing two innings of uneventful ball over 28 pitches.

“He was good,” Murphy said. “I like the kid a lot.”

It was a rough day for Milwaukee relievers, as Jared Koenig allowed four runs on three hits and a walk in just â…“ inning and Sammy Peralta gave up three runs on three hits in one inning of work.

– Murphy has made his annual spring “quantum leap” prediction: Infielder David Hamilton.

“I love this kid. I think this is the quantum leap,” he said. “He’s got so much ability and he’s got experience. He might be a utility player, but I think he can be really good for us. I think he can take his offensive game to a whole other level.

“There’s so much in there offensively. We’ve got to get it out of there.”

– Brandon Woodruff is scheduled to throw a “three-up” simulated game on March 1, which should take him out to roughly 40 pitches.

Quinn Priester, meanwhile, will throw a simulated game of his own early in the week. The Brewers backed off of the right-hander a bit earlier in camp.

With Chad Patrick and Jacob Misiorowski scheduled to start the next two games, that leaves Woodruff, Priester and Kyle Harrison as starters who are awaiting their first chance and Trevor Megill out of the bullpen.

“There were red lights flashing,” Murphy said in reference to Priester. “The type of year he had (workload-wise). The wrist, the fatigue. After the first bullpen it was, ‘Let’s hold on here. Let’s slow him down.’

“My biggest thing with the guys pitching was we played 19 more days than anybody else (with the playoffs) and that’s going to take a toll – especially on young guys. The rate of injuries in the pitching world right now in spring training is ridiculous.

“So, we’re not coming in here taking any chances and it’s reflected in how many (minor leaguers) have pitched in the games.”

Andrew Vaughn of the Brewers is shown during a spring training game against the Chicago White Sox on Feb. 22. Vaughn went 3 for 3 at the plate on Saturday, Feb. 28, against the Reds.

Quotable

“I call him ‘Mike.’ What else do you want me to tell you?” – Murphy, when asked how he settled on nicknaming Coleman Crow ‘Mike.’

Prospect watch

Andrew Fischer’s first Cactus League hit was a memorable one, a 397-foot blast to right field to lead off the bottom of the eighth inning that left his bat at 110.3 mph.

“Really happy for him,” said Murphy of Milwaukee’s top 2025 draft pick who will depart minor-league camp on Sunday and join Team Italy to prepare for the upcoming World Baseball Classic.

“It feels good. You feel more part of it when you do something like that. That’s a great experience for him but he’s a young player that doesn’t know what he doesn’t know.

“There’s nothing negative about that. It’s going to take time.”

Murphy called Fischer onto the field after making his comments and had the New Jersey native show reporters elaborate tattoos he has of Bruce Springsteen and Frank Sinatra on his left shoulder.
