Lady Eagles finish CCISD Tournament with two wins

The eighth-ranked Woodsboro Lady Eagles’ bats erupted Saturday as the Lady Eagles closed the CCISD Tournament with a pair of wins, rolling past Corpus Christi Ray 12-1 and blanking Cotulla 8-0.

The Lady Eagles went 4-2 in the three-day tournament.

Kaygen Lewis powered the opener against Ray, going 3-for-3 with a home run and five RBIs as Woodsboro scored four runs in the first, two in the second and added four more in the fourth on the way to the run-rule win. Chayse Wernli went 3-for-3 with four runs scored, while Sidney Castillo finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Castillo earned the win in the circle, allowing one unearned run on three hits with eight strikeouts in five innings.

Against Cotulla, Woodsboro completed the shutout behind Castillo, who struck out nine and limited Cotulla to two hits in a complete game. The Lady Eagles broke through with a run in the first, then broke it open with four in the sixth and three in the seventh while piling up 13 hits. Lewis went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, Wernli drove in a run, and Aniya Zena added two RBIs.

Woodsboro opened tournament play Thursday with a back-and-forth 8-5 win over Corpus Christi King. Lewis drove in three runs and went 3-for-4, while Castillo went 3-for-4 with a triple and a double. Woodsboro scored three runs in the seventh to create separation, and Castillo struck out eight in a complete game in the circle.

Later Thursday, the Lady Eagles overwhelmed Corpus Christi Miller 15-0 in three innings, scoring three runs in the first, six in the second and six more in the third. Wernli went 2-for-2 with a double and three RBIs. Zena tossed a one-hitter with three strikeouts.

On Friday, Woodsboro ran into two tough matchups and dropped decisions to Corpus Christi Moody (4-0) and Sinton (10-2). Castillo struck out 10 in a complete-game effort.

Sinton jumped out early with four runs in the first and never trailed, though Woodsboro scratched across two runs in the third. Zena had an RBI double, and Woodsboro finished with six hits.

The Lady Eagles (16-5) will begin District 30-2A play on Friday when they host the Yorktown Kitty Kats at 6 p.m.
