According to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com, the New York Mets have signed RHP Dan Hammer to a two-year minor league contract. Hammer, 28, was initially selected in the 13th round of the 2019 draft by the Baltimore Orioles and has spent his minor league career with Baltimore and the Tampa Bay Rays.
Hammer struggled in 2025, posting a 6.57 ERA over 38.1 innings pitched with a staggering 2.11 WHIP. Hammer was brutalized by walks, allowing 29 free passes over his 31 appearances. Despite his inability to control the strike zone, Hammer struck out 9.4 batters per nine, a full strikeout and a half below his career mark of 10.9.
Hammer’s calling card is a fastball that can ride into the high-90s, capping at 97 MPH, with a two-seam fastball and cutter to go along with his. His secondary pitches feature a new sweeper that he added this winter, along with a change-up. If he can control his walks better, Hammer could find his way to the upper ends of the Mets’ minor league system.
Despite five years in the minor leagues after a three-year collegiate career at Pittsburgh, Hammer has yet to reach Triple-A. Despite not once hitting the injured list last year, he was frequently placed and subsequently activated off the Developmental List, costing him multiple stretches.
