SURPRISE, Ariz. — The highest-profile offseason offensive acquisition will play his first official game for the Texas Rangers soon.

Rangers manager Skip Schumaker said Monday that right fielder Brandon Nimmo will “most likely” make his exhibition debut Wednesday vs. Brazil at Surprise Stadium. Nimmo is the only expected position player starter who hasn’t appeared in a game yet this spring because of an individualized ramp-up plan that he believes prepares him the best for opening day.

“[Nimmo] has figured out a way in his career to stay healthy, number one, and get off to a hot start, number two,” Schumaker said earlier this spring. “He feels like the ramp up of a particular amount of at-bats and particular number of innings on the field is best for him to feel the freshest for opening day. He’s still doing all the work on the backfield. He’s still doing the lives, but just gameplay, he likes a slower buildup. It has worked for him for the last four years or so.”

He, right-handed starter Jacob deGrom and right-handed reliever Chris Martin are the only three regulars who have not played yet. Schumaker said that deGrom should make his first Cactus League start “really soon” and that the plan is to give him three-to-four appearances before camp breaks. The 37-year-old pitched three times that spring in preparation of a 30-start, All-Star season.
