After signing in April of 2024 with the Cincinnati Reds, Hansel Jimenez didn’t get on the field that season until the final week of the regular season. It went well for him as he went 6-14 with a double and four stolen bases.

Healthy and ready to go from day one in 2025, Cincinnati put Hansel Jimenez with the Dominican Summer League Reds. He got his season started out in a big way. In the first game of the season he homered, walked twice, and he scored three runs. He went hitless the next two games, striking out five times in his six at-bats. Jimenez rebounded well over the next few days, going 5-10 with four walks, a double, and a home run. He followed that up with a 3-strikeout game before grabbing two hits in the next game and steadying out his performance the rest of June, hitting .279 in the final 12 games but seeing his power disappear as he managed just two extra-base hits in that span.
July didn’t start out comfortably for Hansel Jimenez. On the 1st of the month he was hit by two pitches. In the following two games he would pick up two hits, but then went into a slump over the following two-and-a-half weeks. During that slump where he his .182 over 10 games he did go out and steal five bases on July 10th while going 1-2 with a walk and two more hit-by-pitches. In his final three games of the season he got things going back in the right direction as he had hits in each game, drove in five runs, and had a double and homer.
While there was still nearly a month left in the Dominican Summer League season the Reds brought Hansel Jimenez and several other players from their DSL Reds team stateside to Arizona where they would get some experience in the bridge league and instruction league in August and September.
Later in the year Hansel Jimenez headed to Australia and played in the winter league there, helping lead the Sydney Blue Sox to the best record in the league. He hit .229/.345/.364 with four doubles, four home runs, 17 walks, and 49 strikeouts in 142 plate appearances in the regular season. He went 4-10 in the playoffs with two more doubles, a walk, and five more strikeouts.

There’s a lot to like with Hansel Jimenez. He’s a very athletic player with plenty of power potential. At the plate he’s got a quick bat and in the field he’s got a good arm to go with that athleticism. It’s a guy you can dream on.
He’s been a pull-happy hitter so far in his career and while all five of his home runs with the DSL Reds and three of his four home runs in Australia were to left field, he’s got the ability to hit the ball out the other way, too (see the video below as an example). Jimenez hits the ball very hard and is already showing exit velocities that would be strong for a big leaguer, much less for a teenager.
What he also does that stands out is swing and miss. He struck out 26% of the time this past season in the Dominican Summer League and then struck out 35% of the time in Australia. Jimenez is still young and had time to make adjustments and improve here, but it’s likely an area that he’s going to have to make some strides in if he’s going to be able to climb the ladder.
Defensively Jimenez could stick at shortstop if he doesn’t grow much more, but there’s a chance that he’ll add some weight moving forward on a frame that can handle it and if so he might have to slide over to third base where he’s already spent time at in his career.
There’s starter upside for Jimenez that’s built around power but with a chance to provide some defensive value, too. He’s going to have to show that he can make enough contact and hit for enough average at higher levels, though, if he’s going to be able to make that happen.
