COLUMBIA — South Carolina, desperately in need of an undefeated week, got its second win in two chances on March 4.
The Gamecocks beat Charleston Southern 4-1, cooling off the red-hot Buccaneers, who are off to their best start in program history. USC (9-5) topped USC Upstate on March 3.
USC got two hits, including a home run, from Aaron Jamison and two RBIs from Ethan Lizama. Connor Chicoli responded from a poor outing against Queens last week to pitch four scoreless innings and was relieved by Brandon Stone and Alex Valentin.
Talmadge LeCroy drove in the other run.
The Gamecocks host Princeton in the first of a three-game series, and the first of a doubleheader, at 1 p.m. on March 7.
The Bucs are at Georgia State in the first of a three-game series at 5 p.m. on March 6.
No. 14 Clemson 12, Michigan State 1 (7)
At Clemson, Jay Dillard hit a walk-off two-run home run to run-rule Michigan State 12-1 and keep the Tigers rolling.
It was Dillard’s first career homer. He also doubled and drove in two more runs as Clemson (11-1) had a multi-hit attack. Four players had two hits each and Luke Gaffney had two RBIs.
Eston Simpson improved to 3-0 after scattering five hits and a run over four innings, striking out three. The Tigers relied on three relievers for one inning each to finish.
Nick Williams had two hits for the Spartans (3-8).
The Tigers play the first of a three-game series hosting La Salle at 4 p.m. on March 6.
The Citadel 7, Georgia Southern 1
T.J. Anderson was 2 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs as The Citadel rose to .500 with a 7-1 win over Georgia Southern at Riley Park.
The Bulldogs (5-5) got a strong bullpen game, Riley Ballard starting and Ben Brash picking him up in the third inning. Four relievers finished the game, the staff recording nine strikeouts on the night.
Zach Hunt had two hits and drove in two. The Eagles (2-10) had three multi-hit batters but only the one run.
