(19-27) Asheville Tourists 6, (24-22) Rome Emperors 13
Herick Hernandez, SP: 4IP 2H 2ER 4BB 5K, 5.63 ERA
Ambioris Tavarez, 2B: 3-for-4, 2B, 2R, 2 RBI, BB, SB .262/.376/.352
Justin Janas, RF: 4-for-5, 2 RBI, 2R, .247/.310/.303
Herick Hernandez took to the mound last night looking to build off of his 20 whiff performance in his last start. What he got, however, were fairly mixed reviews as he struggled with his command at times walking four and giving up a pair of hits across four innings of work. That being said it was still his second best start of the month, in a season that’s been a bit more disappointing than expected. Luckily he, and the rest of the Rome pitching staff that combined to give up six runs themselves, didn’t need to do too much as the Rome Emperors offense stole the show – collecting 14 hits and scoring 13 runs while walking an additional EIGHT times.
After going down 2-0 in the top of the fourth inning Rome would answer immediately scoring five runs themselves in the bottom half of the inning. Justin Janas, Patrick Clohisy, and Titus Dumitru all collected RBI that inning. After shutting down the Tourists in the top half of the five and keeping the lead, the Rome offense scored an additional EIGHT runs in the bottom of he eight pretty much putting the game out of reach. Throwing errors, runners constantly on bases, sacrifice flys, bases loaded walks – the inning truly had it all. The biggest hit of the inning was a two run single by Ambioris Tavarez to push the lead to 12-2, that’s how hilariously bad that inning was for the Tourists, and conversely, how awesome it was for the Emperors.
Eight total pitchers were used across both teams yesterday and just three of them had scoreless outings. The top performer being Samuel Strickland for the Emperors who struck out three across two scoreless innings. In a day marred by rain, it was an interesting game to say the least.
(6-11) FCL Braves 3, (8-9) FCL Pirates 6
Jose Perdomo, S: 0-for-3, .262/.315/.323
Mario Baez, 2B: 1-for-3, R, .190/.360/.214
Cayman Goode, SP: 4.2IP 3H 5R 2ER 0BB 3K, 2.60 ERA
The Pirates took game one of the double header, but there were still a couple notable performance. Cayman Goode looks to be the victim of some rough defense a the 19 year old gave up five runs but only two were earned. Most importantly Cayman didn’t walk a single batter over 4.2 innings of work which is significant of its own. The high upside 12th round pick from last year now has a 2.60 ERA across 4 games.
Meanwhile offensively, the FCL Braves managed just three hits with all of them coming in the fifth inning. Jose Perdomo’s strange FCL season continued as the shortstop went 0-for-3 and lowered his OPS down to .638. Of note, Carlos Monteverde was hit by a pitch in the second inning and was removed from the game.
(7-11) FCL Braves 9, (8-10) FCL Pirates 3
Junior Garcia, CF: 1-for-3, 2 BB, R, .182/.265/.273
Luis Parababire, C: 1-for-2, R, 2 RBI, .200/.429/.200
Josnaider Orellana, DH: 2-for-3, 2 RBI, R, .667/.750/.667
Angel Nieblas, 3B: 2-for-4, 2 RBI, .190/.320/.190
After being held to three hits the FCL Braves offense exploded for nine runs on eight hits in their 9-3 win over the Pirates. The bottom of the lineup featuring Josnaider Orellana, and Angel Nieblas combined for four hits and four RBI in the win. 20 year old Yorvi Pirela from Venezuela with the solid start (4IP 3H 1ER 0BB 2K) as he lasted four innings without walking a batter and gave up just one earned run.
