The Washington Nationals resumed the spring training slate on Thursday to take down the New York Mets, 7-4, for the second win over the divisional rival over the last week.

It didn’t start well for Washington after Miles Mikolas allowed a double in the first at bat of the game, then a single two at bats later for the game’s first run on a single to center fielder. The Mets would clear the bases in the next at bat with a 352 foot home run to left center field, handing the Nationals an early 3-0 deficit through one frame.

But Washington would answer right back after Andres Chaparro opened the bottom of the second with a single before third baseman Jose Tena responded with the team’s first home run of the day after a 401 foot hit to left center field narrowed the gap to 3-2.

Washington would then tie the game in the fourth after Tena drew a walk and Robert Hassell III singled to right field, getting runners on first and second with one out. Christian Franklin would then clean up with a single to centerfield that brought Tena home for the game tying run before a grounder into a double play ended the Mets’ threat.

Washington would then take its first lead of the day after Tena drew his second walk of the day before Hassell singled this time to centerfield to get runners on first and second with no outs. A double from Trey Lipscomb two at bats later would send both Hassell and Tena home before Matt Mervis came to pinch hit, then singling into right field to bring Lipscomb home, making it 6-3. A double from Seaver King would bring Mervis home to make it a 7-3 game before right fielder Joey Wiemer was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.

The Mets would add another run in the top of the seventh after a walk with the bases loaded, but a grounder would get Washington out of the jam to preserve the spring training win.

In his second start, Mikolas allowed three runs and three hits including his home run while tossing one walk and three strikeouts in three innings, taking a 5.40 ERA to the bench through two starts. Luis Perales tossed a clean inning while both Andre Garnillo and Orlando Ribalta notched one strikeout in their lone inning pitched.

Now 6-3-3-, the Nationals will return to action on Friday to take on the Houston Astros with first pitch set for 1:05 PM.
