The Chicago White Sox have some tough roster decisions to make ahead of Opening Day. The team has to figure out which players are going to be heading with the big league team to take on the Milwaukee Brewers in less than two weeks. With the roster crunch coming, one player reportedly learned his fate. Let’s take a closer look at who it is and what it means for the White Sox going forward.

One of the more exciting times for players is finding out they are going to be opening the season in MLB instead of being in the minors. Elijah Evans of Just Baseball is reporting that left-handed reliever Chris Murphy will be one of the players who made the White Sox roster. He is expected to be joining the bullpen, being one of at least two southpaw relievers Chicago will carry, alongside Sean Newcomb.

Murphy was traded to the White Sox during the offseason in a deal with the Boston Red Sox. He has pitched in the majors for a few years, making his debut for Boston in 2023. However, he has been one of those quadruple-A players who would pitch between Triple-A and MLB during the season. In 43 MLB games out of the bullpen, Murphy is 4-2 with a 4.15 ERA and a 1.31 WHIP across 82.1 innings.

This was a surprising move for the fact that Murphy has minor league options available. Bullpens in the majors typically only carry a pair of left-handed relievers due to matchup restraints. However, there are other bullpen arms who are on the fringe that are lefties. It will be interesting to see how Murphy does out of the bullpen in the big leagues throughout the season.
