Spring training play continues on Tuesday night in Arizona with a game between the Cleveland Guardians and Cincinnati Reds.

Two Ohio teams will go head-to-head on Tuesday night in spring training action at Goodyear Ballpark, as the Cleveland Guardians and the Cincinnati Reds prepare for Opening Day next week. Both clubs are beginning to fine tune roster selections as they use these late Cactus League matchups to iron out rotations and give players important at-bats before the regular season begins. Fans can look for both teams to work through lineups and pitching depth on Tuesday, with players getting crucial work in at the plate and on the mound. As managers jockey through roster spots between up-and-coming players and veterans, the competition will heat up both on the field and in the dugout as the Arizona sun sets.

The Reds will look to bounce back from a tough 11-6 loss to the Diamondbacks on Monday, which drops the team to 13-11 in spring training play. The loss was credited to Andrew Abbott on the mound, dropping him to 1-3 after he threw for two innings and gave up eight earned runs, while striking out three. TJ Friedl and JJ Bleday led the Reds at the plate, each going 2-for-3. Bleday finished the game with two RBIs from a two-run home run to right center in the top of the fifth. Rece Hinds also homered, his fourth of the season, bringing the Reds’ final run home.

Cleveland also dropped a game on Monday, falling 5-2 to the Chicago Cubs to move to 11-12 in Cactus League play. The Cubs jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but the Guardians answered by way of a Kyle Manzarado RBI on a fielder’s choice. The Cubs regained the lead in the second, extending it to 4-1 and adding another run in the fifth. In the bottom of the ninth, Juan Benjamin hit his first home run in Cactus League play with a shot to right field, but with only one out remaining, Cleveland was unable to rally and force extra innings. Gavin Williams was credited with the loss after giving up all five earned runs in 4.2 innings of work.

Tuesday night’s game will be the first between the Guardians and Reds in Cactus League play, but they will meet once more before Opening Day next week.
