The Los Angeles Dodgers optioned right-hander Kyle Hurt to Triple-A on Wednesday, ending his chances of making the Opening Day roster.
Hurt, 27, has limited MLB experience, but has managed solid numbers across four appearances in the big leagues. He’s pitched 8.2 MLB innings, and has allowed just one earned run throughout while striking out six.
The former fifth-round pick spent most of the 2025 season sidelined after undergoing Tommy John surgery, but had a decent showing during his rehab assignment in Triple-A. Through seven games, he had a 1.93 ERA and struck out 10 batters in 9.1 innings pitched.
Hurt continued his solid run of form into spring training this year, making seven appearances for the Dodgers in the Cactus League. He allowed three runs across 7.1 innings for a 3.68 ERA, and managed five scoreless performances for LA.
The right-hander used his opportunity in big league camp this spring to soak up any knowledge he could as he aimed to return to the majors.
“It’s just super exciting to be in this locker room, like just watching Yoshi do everything he does on a day-to-day basis and like how Blake Snell goes about it,” Hurt told Dodgers Nation’s Doug McKain. “Everyone just kind of does it their own way and we just feed off each other. A lot of these young guys are definitely, including myself, we still see what these guys do, but it’s just exciting just watching the day-by-day routine. That’s one big thing for me.”

While it’s uncertain if the Dodgers will need Hurt or not for the coming season, his solid showings throughout spring training and the promise he showed in MLB in both 2023 and 2024 will definitely keep him in the running for a run of games in the big leagues this year.
The Dodgers have struggled with pitching availability over the last two seasons, and having Hurt ready whenever they need him is a huge advantage for the Dodgers.
If he performs this season how he did in 2025 with Triple-A Oklahoma City, though, Hurt could force the Dodgers’ hand and make an MLB return.
