It may have been the best business decision for the Pittsburgh Pirates to let Andrew McCutchen leave in free agency.

From a sentimental standpoint, though, Pirates fans aren’t going to love seeing McCutchen in a Texas Rangers uniform this season.

And oh, if McCutchen keeps doing what he’s doing right now, it may not even feel like a great business decision, either.

It’s just Spring Training, and it’s a small sample, but McCutchen is on fire.

He hit his first home run of his shortened spring on Wednesday night:

That’s some impressive opposite field power from Cutch.

On the spring, these are his stats:

McCutchen may be 39 years old, but he certainly looks ready for the season ahead.

In 2025, he batted .239 with 13 homers in 477 at bats. He was just a tad above replacement level, with a 0.1 WAR.

The Rangers probably won’t need him to play every day, but he’ll still get the chance to hit against lefties at least.

And for Pirates fans, it won’t stop being weird to see McCutchen in a different uniform, whether it was a logical decision or not.
