Scott County couldn’t keep up the pace after an explosive start in the first two innings Wednesday night, dropping a 14-6 verdict at Assumption in its softball season opener.

Aubrey Wigginton went 4-for-4 for Scott County, which scored four runs in the top of the first inning and two more in the second to build a 6-2 lead.

Assumption battled back with three runs in the bottom of the second but trailed until the fifth, when the Rockets racked up six runs. They added three insurance tallies an inning later.

Ella Wells and Grace Sander each had three hits for Assumption. Sander led a trio with three RBI that also included Maleya Giddens and Alli Schaffer. Jaelynn Oaks and Sofia Yang rounded the Rockets’ parade of repeat hitters.

Hadley Swint matched Wigginton with a perfect night at the plate, smacking a double and single with two walks and three RBI.

Makenzie Leidecker and Skylar Mathies each clouted a double for the Lady Cards. Makiah Jackson added a single and a stolen base. Wigginton swiped a pair.

SC built its first-inning lead with hits by Wigginton and Jackson setting the table. Swint (single), Gracie Strong (sacrifice fly) and Leidecker (two-bagger) produced runs. Another scored on a wild pitch.

Assumption answered with a pair on Schaffer’s home run before Scott County surged again in the second. Swint punctuated a lengthy at-bat with a double to left field.

Three pitchers were victimized by 11 unearned runs for the Cardinals, who committed four errors.

Scott County hosted its home opener with Woodford County after press time Thursday and travels to Fleming County on Friday.
