The former American League Cy Young winner chose to stay with the Toronto Blue Jays for the 2026 season by picking up his $16 million player option. His choice came after a short but meaningful time with the team in 2025, when he joined Toronto in a mid-season trade from the Cleveland Guardians. Even though the season ended just short of a title, Bieber made it clear that his decision was about more than numbers. It was about how he felt inside the clubhouse, how his family felt in the city, and the belief that this team can go one step further next time.He shared his thoughts on the Foul Territory podcast on Wednesday, giving a clear and honest reason behind his call. For Bieber, it was about comfort, trust, and unfinished work.

Bieber spoke openly about how much he enjoyed his time with the Blue Jays. He said, “Last year was the most fun I’ve ever had. It didn’t end the way that we wanted to. But the togetherness in the locker room and the bonds that we were able to forge and obviously the whole organization from top to bottom, I was pleasantly surprised.”That feeling showed on the field too. After joining Toronto in July, Bieber made his debut a few weeks later and went 4-2 with a 3.57 ERA in the regular season. When the playoffs started, he stepped up again. He finished with a 2-1 record, a 3.86 ERA, and 18 strikeouts across 18 2/3 innings, helping the team make a deep postseason run.But his decision was not only about baseball. He explained how his family played a big role. “I’ve always heard great things about Toronto. But to experience it first hand, not just myself, but my family. My wife, my son, my parents and my brother, we just had the best time. We sat down and we talked about it. This is the place that we’d love to be and wanted to be here for the future.”There is also a strong competitive reason behind his return. The Blue Jays came very close to winning it all last season, and that loss still stays with him. Bieber said, “I helped getting so close [to the championship] last year and having a little sour taste in the mouth at the end of the year. Hopefully we’ll be able to go back and make it one step further.”While Bieber’s return is a big positive, the team also received tough news. Manager John Schneider confirmed on Thursday that young pitcher Trey Yesavage will begin the 2026 season on the injured list due to a shoulder impingement.Yesavage, just 22, had a strong start to his career. He made his debut on September 15 and quickly gained attention in the postseason. He went 3-1 with a 3.58 ERA and delivered one of the most talked-about performances in the World Series. In Game 5 at Dodger Stadium, he struck out 12 batters in seven innings, setting a rookie record in the Fall Classic. Now, Toronto will need to adjust early in the season without him. Still, with Bieber choosing to stay and lead the rotation, the team has a strong base as they look to make another deep run.Banner Insert
