I’m really looking forward to this one. As a blogger on the West Coast, the Padres, Rockies, or Diamondbacks often become ambient noise in my apartment in the evenings, and that’s made Michael King pretty close to appointment viewing. The one-time Yankee has established himself as one of the better arms in all of baseball since being dealt to San Diego in the winter of 2023.
To wit, King has a 2.09 ERA and has been worth almost a win and a half in his first seven starts, averaging almost six innings per outing. His two-seam is as fun a pitch to see as any in the game, and he pairs it with a four-seam and slider all thrown relatively equally as frequent, making him a tough arm to gameplan against.
Meanwhile, it wasn’t so long ago that King and Clarke Schmidt weren’t just teammates but both competing for slots in the same rotation. Now, the 29-year-old Yankee is looking to keep building up after that “barking” back injury to open the year. He hasn’t pitched since April 27th, being bumped out of the rotation as a precaution on Saturday due to left side soreness, but in that last start against the Blue Jays looked awful good, with five innings allowing just a single run.
Aaron Judge finds himself back to the three-hole, with Trent Grisham and Ben Rice hitting ahead of him. Jasson Domínguez is the DH and hitting fifth, with Paul Goldschmidt on the bench against a tough righthanded starter. Tonight’s forecast calls for some showers right around time of first pitch, but should hopefully be much more mild overall than last night.
