NEWARK, N.J. — The University at Albany baseball team put together one of its most complete performances of the season on Sunday, riding a relentless offensive attack and shutdown bullpen to a 10-3 victory over NJIT at Yogi Berra Stadium. The win secured the Great Danes’ first America East Conference series victory of the year.
UAlbany (3-14, 2-1 America East) wasted no time setting the tone, striking in the first inning when Michael Maggio came around to score on an RBI groundout by Luke Filippi. The early momentum continued into the second, as John Vitucci delivered an RBI single to double the lead.
The game broke open in the third inning, where the Great Danes’ offense erupted. Logan Morris and Filippi each laced doubles to start the frame before Cooper Loyal drove in two runs with a shot to left-center. With the bases loaded, Patrick DeSarno and Maggio worked back-to-back walks to push the advantage to 6-0, forcing NJIT (7-12, 1-2 America East) onto its heels.
NJIT managed to get one back in the bottom half of the inning with a bases-loaded walk, but that would be the only damage against starter Christian Mello. After Mello exited, Ethan Nardacci entered and delivered a dominant relief outing, striking out five over 2.1 scoreless innings to halt any momentum.
From there, UAlbany continued to tack on. Levi McAllister singled home Maggio in the sixth, and Tre Mariano added a solo home run in the seventh to extend the lead to 8-1. NJIT briefly threatened in the bottom of the seventh, scoring twice, but Matthew Mariano entered and quickly stabilized the game.
Mariano was lights out the rest of the way, tossing three scoreless innings to earn the save and secure the 10-3 win. The bullpen effort—highlighted by Nardacci and Mariano—proved instrumental in preserving the early cushion.
Offensively, Maggio led the charge with three hits, three runs scored, and an RBI, while Morris added two hits and drove in two runs, including a two-run single in the ninth to cap the scoring. Loyal contributed a key two-run extra-base hit, and Tre Mariano finished with a home run and three RBIs.
Head coach Jon Mueller praised his team’s all-around effort following the win.
“We had a complete game offensively,” Mueller said. “We spoke about getting off to a good start and we did that. The arms were good today, especially Mello, Nardacci, and obviously, when we get to Matt, we feel pretty good.”
With the series-clinching victory in hand, the Great Danes now turn their attention to their home opener, where they will welcome the University of Massachusetts for a midweek matchup on Tuesday.
