The New York Mets visit the Miami Marlins today in spring training action at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium, with Opening Day later this week.
New York enters the matchup following a split-squad Saturday that produced two losses. The Mets fell to the Houston Astros in Port St. Lucie, 7–5, as Jonah Tong’s struggles continue. He allowed three runs and six hits in 4.1 innings, while striking out five. Marcus Semien supplied most of New York’s offense with an RBI double with the bases loaded, bringing all runners in.
The other Mets squad fell 3–1 to the Washington Nationals, despite a strong start from prospect Joander Suarez, who pitched four scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and striking out three. Mark Vientos hit a solo homer in the eighth inning — his first of the spring — for the Mets’ only run.
Miami, meanwhile, is also coming off a 7–4 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals. Janson Junk had another poor outing, allowing four runs and seven hits over three innings. Griffin Conine and Connor Norby both hit their second home runs of the spring.
David Peterson makes the start for New York today, opposing Sandy Alcantara for Miami.
Peterson was hit for four runs and five hits in four innings last week against the Nationals. Alcantara faced the Mets last week, allowing two runs and three hits over four innings.
