It’s possible this is the first time anyone was ever told they made an MLB roster like this.

Texas Rangers manager Skip Schumaker took a mound visit midway through Monday night’s exhibition game. He didn’t have any pointers he wanted to share with 24-year old pitcher Carter Baumler.

Instead, he simply wanted to tell him he had made the team for Opening Day.

Talk about a cool moment:

Baumler was taken in the Rule 5 Draft this offseason, coming to the Rangers’ organization from the Orioles’ system.

The key for a Rule 5 pick, though, is that he has to make the MLB roster and stay on it all season. Otherwise, he’s offered back to his old organization.

And it wasn’t a given Baumler would make it. He only reached Double-A for six appearances last season and had never pitched in Triple-A.

But Baumler clearly impressed the Rangers this spring.

He’s been good at the lower levels of the minors, a 3.05 minor league ERA with 10.6 strikeouts per nine innings.

And now, he’s coming to the majors with Texas.

Schumaker just picked a really cool, unique moment to tell him that.
