SNYDER – The No. 2-ranked Midland College baseball team swept a road doubleheader against Western Texas College on Thursday.
Logan Flores threw a one-hitter to lead the Chaparrals to an 8-0 win in game 1. Then the Chaps used a six-run ninth inning to pull away for a 14-7 win in the second game.
The doubleheader was moved up a day because of expected high winds on Friday.
Flores did not walk a batter and struck out six in his seven innings of work in his strong outing.
MC (28-3, 13-1 in Western Junior College Athletic Conference) had six hits and a five-run fourth inning as Bammer Maes was 2-for-2 with two walks and three RBI; Caleb Eagar was 2-for-2 with a double, two walks, a stolen base, an RBI and two runs scored; Jorge Gill was 1-for-2 with two walk, two RBI and three runs scored; and Stevyn Andrachick drove in two runs.
In game 2, MC led 8-5 through eight innings before a big ninth inning gave it a little extra breathing room.
Eagar had two hits and drove in four runs to led the MC offense; Andrachick was 3-for-5 with two doubles, a triple and three runs scored; Gil had a walk, a hit-by-pitch, a stolen base, two RBI and two runs scored; Dylon Myrow was 1-for-2 with four walks, an RBI and two runs scored; and Legacy grad Caiden Olivas had a single, a hit-by-pitch, a sacrifice fly and a run scored.
Jason Berglund got the win after he allowed four runs, on four hits, four walks and struck out five over 5 1/3 innings.
MC concludes series with the Westerners (8-24, 5-9) with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Friday at Christensen Stadium.
SNYDER – The Midland College softball team opened conference play with a doubleheader road sweep of Western Texas College on Thursday.
The Lady Chaparrals shut out WTC, 8-0, in five innings in the first game, before winning 10-2 in the second game.
Andrews grad Alexys Cornejo was 3-for-3 with a double, RBI and two runs scored to lead the Lady Chaps (22-4, 2-0 in Western Texas Junior College Athletic Conference) to a win in game 1. Emma Davis was 1-for-1 with two walks, two RBI and a run scored; while Brianna Flores had a double, walk and an RBI.
Marie Rondeau allowed just three hits, walked one and struck out eight over five innings to get the win.
Cornejo was 2-for-3 with a walk and two RBI in game 2. Davis was 2-for-3 with a double, walk, two RBI and a run scored; Hannah Flores was 2-for-2 with a walk, RBI and two runs scored; Mia Garcia had a double, two RBI and two runs scored; and Brianna Flores had two RBI.
Anays Perez got the win after she allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits, four walks and two strikeouts over five innings.
The Lady Chaps and Westerners (17-15, 0-2) conclude the four-game series with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday at Lady Chaps Field.
