The Tigers’ young talent wasted no time making an impact, powering Detroit to an 8-2 opening day win over the San Diego Padres.

Behind a standout Major League Baseball debut Kevin McGonigle and a strong start from Tarik Skubal, the Tigers offered an early look at a team blending youth with experience.

Off the field, opening day also marked the start of a revamped Comerica Park experience, from new food options to postgame concerts featuring major acts such as Nelly.

Detroit set the tone early, scoring four runs in the first inning as part of a 12-hit performance.

McGonigle made an immediate impact in his MLB debut, recording his first hit on a two-run double. He finished 4-for-5, becoming just the sixth player since 1900 to tally four hits in his debut, according to MLB.

Skubal anchored the Tigers on the mound, throwing six scoreless innings with six strikeouts.

McGonigle’s breakout debut highlighted what could become a defining theme this season: meaningful contributions from the Tigers’ young core.

The roster itself has also shifted, including the return of Justin Verlander for the 2026 season, further shaping the club’s outlook.

At Comerica Park, fans will notice a different experience from the moment they walk in, part of a broader, multi-year investment aimed at reshaping both the fan and player experience.

The Tigers have introduced a wide-ranging lineup of new food and drink options, many rooted in Detroit’s local restaurant scene while still embracing the over-the-top ballpark fare fans expect.

Among the highlights are the “Tiger Tail,” a footlong corn dog topped with Coney chili, mustard and onions; a pierogi nacho with kielbasa, queso and sauerkraut; and a smoked short rib sandwich with elote slaw and BBQ mayo. The team is also partnering with local favorites like Slow’s BBQ, Breadless and Bert’s BBQ.

There’s also a stronger emphasis on value, with meal deals, discounted concessions and themed food offerings throughout the season.

Concerts, giveaways and theme nights

That same approach carries into the team’s entertainment and promotions.

The Tigers are expanding their “Sounds of Summer” postgame concert series, with Nelly set to perform June 19 against the White Sox and Flo Rida on July 24 against the Royals. A third concert is scheduled for Sept. 11 against Colorado, with the artist still to be announced.

The 2026 season is also packed with fan-focused experiences. Marquee weekends like Black in Baseball, Strike Out Cancer and the franchise’s 125th anniversary celebration headline the calendar, while Friday Night Party in the Park returns with fireworks, live music and pregame food and drink specials.

Giveaways will once again be a major draw, ranging from replica jerseys and bobbleheads to specialty items like a Tigers hockey jersey. The team is also introducing monthly “Tuesday Tee Drops,” featuring limited-edition T-shirts designed by local artists.

Fans can also expect pop culture nights like Star Wars, Harry Potter, Margaritaville and Grateful Dead, along with community events, heritage celebrations and “Bark in the Park” games where fans can bring their dogs to the ballpark.

Beyond promotions, the Tigers continue a multi-year, $200 million investment in ballpark upgrades. New additions include The Press Club, an intimate premium hospitality space near the media level, and the expanded MotorCity Casino Hotel Tier Club, which now offers all inclusive food, beverage and climate-controlled seating.

The team also added accessibility features, including a universal changing table in a family assist restroom near Section 210, designed to better accommodate fans of all ages and abilities.

New merchandise is also part of the experience this season, with alternate jerseys, specialty opening day gear and expanded customization options available throughout Comerica Park.

How to watch the Tigers games in 2026

Tigers broadcasts will look different this season following the end of the club’s previous regional sports network agreement, with MLB now producing and distributing games in-house under the newly launched Detroit SportsNet.

Detroit SportsNet will serve as a year-round home for both the Tigers and Red Wings, with familiar broadcast voices remaining in place.

In-market fans can watch games through participating cable and satellite providers or stream them through the MLB App on web, mobile and connected TV devices.
