It’s hardly a surprise, given the cozy relationship seen between the Atlanta-headquartered media company and the Major League Baseball team. Nevertheless, it is notable: the Atlanta Braves have agreed to let Gray Media simulcast a series of regular-season match-ups with the team’s newly created BravesVision platform.
Some 25 games will be seen across Gray-owned stations across the Braves’ territory, in addition to appearing on BravesVision. It makes sense, as Gray Media’s Raycom Sports is producing the full season of non-nationally broadcast games for BravesVision.
The multi-year agreement sees Raycom Sports providing end-to-end live production services for BravesVision, starting with the Opening Day matchup on Friday (3/27) that sees the Braves host the Kansas City Royals in an interleague game.
“Gray Media has been a valued partner in bringing Braves baseball to fans across Braves Country, and we’re proud to deepen that relationship with 25 games on free, over-the-air television through Gray this season,” said Atlanta Braves President/CEO Derek Schiller. “From Opening Day to the final out of the season, our goal is to make Braves baseball as accessible as possible and through our expanded offering with Gray, we’re providing another enhanced avenue for fans to watch our ballclub.”
Gray Media Executive Chairman and co-CEO Hilton Howell Jr. said, “Braves baseball has been part of the fabric of Atlanta for 60 years, and we’re thrilled to expand Gray’s relationship with the Braves this season to help fans across Braves Country celebrate that milestone. By bringing 25 games to free, over-the-air television and simulcasting with BravesVision, we’re giving viewers more ways than ever to watch and share in the excitement all season long.”
The games will broadcast over-the-air in Atlanta on WANF-46.1, “Atlanta News First,” and on the Peachtree Sports Network (WPCH-17.2). They will also air on the digital multicast channels that are home to the Palmetto Sports & Entertainment Network and the Tennessee Valley Sports & Entertainment Network. Portions of the Gulf Coast Sports & Entertainment Network with the Braves’ territory will also get the games.
A select number of games will also air on some of Gray’s Southeastern ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, and CW affiliates, the company said.
The simulcast agreement comes amid rising tension between the NAB and “Big Tech” companies including Netflix, which enjoyed an exclusive official season opener by being the sole home for the New York Yankees versus the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday evening. As the NAB sees it, live sports belongs on free-to-air television and not on a subscription-based streaming platform, which is perceived as a much larger threat than the regional sports networks that snagged MLB rights decades ago — only to lead to the collapse of the RSN model in the last two years.
