The Toronto Blue Jays look to stay perfect Saturday, after an Opening Day walk-off win over the Athletics.
The Toronto Blue Jays go for the series victory over the Athletics on Saturday afternoon. These two started their season a day after many other clubs did on Friday, with the defending American League pennant winners taking the opening game in a close 3-2 win. Blue Jays’ fans don’t need to be reminded how close they came to winning their first World Series championship since 1993. Instead, the Los Angeles Dodgers won back-to-back titles. But Toronto is the defending AL East champion, and they made short work of the New York Yankees in the divisional round of the playoffs last October. While the Blue Jays lost Bo Bichette to the New York Mets and Chris Bassitt to the Baltimore Orioles, they solidified their rotation, highlighted by the signing of Dylan Cease to a seven-year deal after pitching for the San Diego Padres. The A’s are coming off their first season in Sacramento, CA, where they went 76-86. The Athletics are not anticipated to move to Las Vegas, NV, until the 2028 season. While the A’s aren’t expected to make the playoffs for the first time in five seasons this year, this team looks like it is heading in the right direction, maybe moving ahead of schedule before they move to Vegas. The Blue Jays will be the big -186 favorites to win this series on Saturday.

The Blue Jays won 3-2 on Friday on the shoulders of Andres Gimenez, who drove in the winning walk-off run in the bottom of the ninth on a two-out single to right. The A’s got on the board first with a homer from Shea Langeliers in the fourth. The Blue Jays took the lead in the fifth, getting all of their offense from Gimenez, with a two-RBI triple. The A’s also got all their offense from one player in the season opener. Langeliers hit another homer in the top of the ninth to tie the game. Kevin Gausman had the best start of the game despite the homer to Langeliers, going six innings, giving up just one hit while striking out 11 batters.
The Blue Jays will hope for a similar performance from Cease as Gausman did, who will get his first start for Toronto. The righty had a down year in his second season in San Diego, going 8-12 with a 4.55 ERA. Cease did eat a lot of innings, though, going 168 innings in 32 starts. The A’s will counter with Jeffery Springs trying to tie this series. The lefty went 11-11 with a 4.11 ERA in 30 starts in his first season with the Athletics in 2025.
