Rookie Kevin McGonigle, coming off a four-hit major-league debut, delivered a tiebreaking two-run single in the top of the eighth as Detroit struck for four runs on the way to a 5-2 victory on Friday night. Spencer Torkelson tied the game in the sixth with an RBI single and Riley Greene delivered a run-scoring infield single to knot the game at 2-2 in the eighth. Dillon Dingler closed out the Tigers’ big inning with an RBI knock. Framber Valdez didn’t factor in the decision in his Tiger debut, allowing one earned run over six innings.

Miguel Andujar drove in the game’s first run for the Padres with a fourth-inning infield single and Ramon Laureano delivered a go-ahead RBI double in the sixth. Starter Michael King allowed just one hit in five shutout innings, striking out six and walking four before departing. Jeremiah Estrada entered the game in the eighth and recorded only two outs while giving up four runs on one hit and three walks.

Right-hander Randy Vasquez tries to avoid the sweep as he makes the start for San Diego on Saturday night. In 28 appearances, 26 of them starts, last season, Vasquez posted a 3.84 ERA and 1.324 WHIP in 133.2 innings. Veteran Jack Flaherty gets the call for the Tigers as he looks to bounce back from a 4.64 ERA and 1.280 WHIP performance in 31 starts and 161 innings in 2025 during which he fanned 188 batters and led the American League with 15 losses.
