The Boston Red Sox lost to the Cincinnati Reds on Saturday in extra innings, and their early use of challenges impacted the game.
The Red Sox were out of ABS challenges before the end of the third inning. Carlos Narváez challenges a ball call in the second inning that was upheld. The second challenge was lost by Roman Anthony when he challenged a 3-1 pitch that was called a strike. He challenged the previous pitch as well and won, making the count 3-1.
The unsuccessful challenge by Anthony was the last the Red Sox would have until extra innings. However, not having those challenges impacted how the game played out. Anthony spoke on using the challenge early and took accountability, noting it was not smart.
“Just not a good time to challenge; 3-1. I just got too aggressive with it. Can’t happen,” Anthony said per MassLive’s Christopher Smith.
Perhaps on another day, losing challenges early would not be an issue. However, considering the type of day home plate umpire CB Bucknor was having behind the plate, it proved costly. Bucknor rang up Trevor Story and Marcelo Mayer on pitches that would have been balls if they were challenged later in the game.
Story was called out on strikes in the fourth inning on a ball that was outside, and Mayer was called out on strikes on a pitch that was inside. Had the Red Sox had their challenges, they could have perhaps gotten those calls overturned and had a better chance to win. Anthony spoke on the opportunity he took away from Story and Mayer to challenge.
“I think it just goes back to me kind of wasting that second one,” Anthony said. “Can’t happen. And unfortunately you just lose them. And we saw how that worked out. So it’s a lesson. We’ll take it as a lesson. At least I will. Rather it happen now than down the road. But kind of just take that and learn from that and learn from what followed that and hold onto those.”
How teams use the new ABS challenge system will be something to monitor all season. Saturday’s Red Sox game was a prime example of the risk that comes with challenging early in the game.
