The Tampa Bay Rays try to avoid the season-series sweep on Sunday at the hands of the St. Louis Cardinals, after nearly tying it up the day before.

The St. Louis Cardinals go for the sweep against the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday, after a thrilling walk-off win in Game 2. The Cardinals won the series on Saturday with a 6-5 victory in 10 innings after a furious comeback from the Rays. It looked like the game was a foregone conclusion for a St. Louis victory. The Cardinals scored two in the first and two more in the eighth to go into the final inning with a 4-0 lead. Tampa Bay then started its rally with an infield single by Chandler Simpson, and the Cardinals had a throwing error for the Rays’ first run of the game. Pinch hitter Nick Fortes came up clutch with an RBI single to tie the game in a four-run ninth for Tampa. Designated hitter Yandy Diaz drove in the go-ahead single in the top of the 10th to completely swing the momentum in the Rays’ favor. But the Cardinals weren’t done fighting with St. Louis rookie JJ Wetherholt drove in two runs on a single to walk off the game. The back-and-forth late-inning heroics overshadowed a tremendous start from Michael McGreeby, who threw six hitless innings while walking two and striking out five. St. Louis won on Opening Day Thursday in a 9-7 final, going into Sunday’s finale up 2-0.
