The New York Mets (2-1) and St. Louis Cardinals (2-1) missed chances to sweep season-opening series on Sunday and face off at Busch Stadium on Monday to open a three-game set in St. Louis.

Jordan Walker hit a three-run homer while Nolan Gorman and Pedro Pages also went deep, but St. Louis dropped an 11-7 decision on Sunday to the visiting Tampa Bay Rays. Dustin May was hit hard in his Cardinal debut, surrendering six runs on 10 hits in four innings as St. Louis never led in the game. 

Juan Soto singled home the tying run in the fifth inning on Sunday and doubled home a run in the bottom of the 10th, but Francisco Lindor was thrown out trying to score from first base with no one out, and the Pittsburgh Pirates salvaged a win in the three-game series by taking a 4-3 decision. Nolan McLean struck out eight in five innings, allowing two runs and four hits, while Bo Bichette heard the boo birds at Citi Field as he finished a 1-for-14 series with eight strikeouts.

Kyle Leahy, a reliever since coming up to the Cardinals in 2023, earned a spot in the rotation and takes the ball on Monday night. He posted a 3.07 ERA and 1.227 WHIP in 88 innings over 62 appearances last season, starting once as an opener on the final day of the campaign. Right-hander Clay Holmes, who worked to a 3.53 ERA and 1.304 WHIP in 31 starts and 165.2 innings last season, gets the call for New York.
