The San Francisco Giants have started their 2026 campaign 0-3. Not an ideal start by any means considering the fact they have only scored one run in their first three games.

The Giants completed a trade on Monday with the Milwaukee Brewers.

Per a team announcement, the Giants traded Luis Matos to the Brewers for cash considerations. The Giants had designated Matos for assignment earlier last week.

Matos was a former top prospect in the Giants’ farm system. Along with his departure, they also designated utility man Tyler Fitzgerald for assignment.

Fitzgerald slashed .252/.309/.430 with 21 homers in his tenure with San Francisco.

Matos, a once highly-touted prospect, ranked as high as No. 3 in the Giants’ farm system. He made his MLB debut during the 2023 season, but since his debut, he’s only played in 178 games with 15 homers.

He had more at-bats in the minors than the majors in that span, clocking in 823 minor-league plate appearances. In those appearances, he’s produced a slash line of .290/.354/.495 with 30 long balls.

The Brewers once again find themselves with a player they can mold to their liking. With Matos, he has less than two years of team control and could exercise that in his 2030 campaign.

Matos is better hitting off left-handers, slashing a career 238/.302/.411 line. By comparison, his slash line against right-handers is .226/.267/.342.

Brewers general manager Matt Arnold was very confident on acquiring Matos.

“Not everybody hits their ground running. There are ingredients to like, and we want to give him a shot. We’re the land of opportunity,” Arnold said.

The Giants remained busy after the flurry of moves as they acquired relief pitcher Dylan Smith from the Detroit Tigers. Fitzgerald was the one who was DFA’d in order to make room for Smith on the roster.

Smith will not immediately join the Giants, but will start his tenure down in Triple-A Sacramento.

He had a short successful stint with Detroit last June, only allowing two earned runs in 13 innings pitched. In his minor-league career, he’s posted a 2.27 ERA and 57 punchouts in 39 innings pitched.
