WHEATFIELD — Crown Point scored six runs in the first inning against Kankakee Valley starter Mallorie Rose and continued to add to the score over the next four innings to pick up an 11-1 victory in the season opener for both teams.
The Kougars, who won 4 of 5 games during a spring break trip to Tennessee last week, struggled to stack hits together against Crown Point starter Paige Liezert, who struck out 12 batters over five innings in tossing a two-hitter.
Both of KV’s hits were for extra bases, with Madalynn Hemphill hitting a solo home run and Julia Mahmet adding a double.
The Bulldogs countered with five extra-base hits, including solo home runs from Anna Neal and Ashlyn Kita. Lulu Johnston had a pair of doubles, drove in a run and scored three runs and Kita was 3 for 3, adding a double with her solo shot.
Rose went 4 1/3 innings, allowing four earned runs on six hits. She struck out six and walked four.
Junior teammate Jessica Beauchamp worked 2/3rd of an inning in relief, allowing six runs, but just one was earned.
KVHS returned to action Tuesday when it traveled to Kouts for a 4:30 p.m. start.
