The New York Yankees couldn’t get anything going against Seattle Mariners starting pitcher Luis Castillo on Monday night. And honestly, we should have seen it coming.
Castillo went six scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and two walks while striking out seven to help the M’s win the series opener against the Bronx Bombers 2-1.

The part we should have seen coming? The part where Castillo didn’t allow any runs. And the reason for that is the temperature for first pitch at T-Mobile Park at 6:40 p.m. Monday night was 48 degrees, and Castillo has literally never let an opponent score in a Mariners game with weather that is under 50 degrees.
Mariners director of baseball communications Alex Mayer, a known stat guru, unearthed that incredible piece of knowledge following Monday’s game. Per Mayer, Castillo has made four starts in sub-50-degree weather, and he has a spotless 0.00 ERA in 27 innings over those games.
Luis Castillo in four career Mariners starts in sub 50° degree weather: 0.00 ERA, an amazing 0 runs allowed (!!!) in 27 innings pitched.
Last name of opposing starting pitcher tonight? Weathers. 🥶🥶🥶

There’s another thing that could have forecast Castillo’s gem, which is the fact that he’s always been pretty good against the Yankees. Following Monday’s game, Castillo now has a career 2.40 ERA and 1.192 WHIP in eight starts against New York, with 44 strikeouts over 48 2/3 innings.
Castillo, who actually made his first two starts in a Mariners uniform against the Yankees following his trade to Seattle from the Cincinnati Reds in 2022, has especially shined against the Yankees at Seattle’s T-Mobile Park. In three home starts against the Yankees since ’22, Castillo has allowed just one earned run over 20 innings (0.45 ERA) with 20 strikeouts to six walks and 11 hits.
Monday was the first time Castillo faced the Yankees in Seattle in weather under 50 degrees, but it was just 54 degrees when he threw six innings of one-run ball against New York at T-Mobile Park on May 14, 2025.
The Mariners will turn to opening day starter Logan Gilbert in Game 2 of the series with the Yankees at 6:40 p.m. Tuesday. Mariners Radio Network coverage on Seattle Sports begins at 5:30 p.m. with the pregame show.
