The Kansas City Royals plan to leave Kauffman Stadium after the 2030 season.

The MLB team’s lease at Kauffman, where they have hosted games since 1973, ends in 2030.

On Monday, Royals Chairman and CEO John Sherman talked to reporters and didn’t reveal a timeline on a new stadium but said he wants the finalization to happen “sooner rather than later.”

Sherman said the team has two cities for relocation: North Kansas City and downtown Kansas City.

“I think we’ve talked enough about… certainly North Kansas City,” Sherman said.

“They’ve done a nice job with both land assemblage and political leadership up there.

“There are still some discussions going on with the Kansas side, and then certainly the other one is Kansas City, Missouri, downtown.”

The downtown KC location would be Washington Square Park, east of Union Station.

Sherman was asked whether he’s worried he won’t have a new stadium open by the 2031 season if they can’t find a location.

“We still have a cushion there,” he said. “I think Atlanta built their stadium, I think from start to finish in 39 months.

“So, we’ve got a little bit of a cushion, but not a big one.

“It’s time to get on with it.”

The Royals aren’t the only Kansas City sports team that’s facing its stadium being destroyed.

The Chiefs’ Arrowhead Stadium future is murky with the team leaving the venue ahead of the 2030 NFL season.

They are set to cross state lines in Kansas to build a state-of-the-art $3bn stadium.

Jackson County has set a deadline to decide the future of the Truman Sports Complex.

The Chiefs’ Arrowhead Stadium and the Royals’ Kauffman Stadium are located within the facility.
