Rockies Report, Game 5:

ROCKIES BOTTOM LINE: Toronto pounded out 13 hits over five innings against a fatigued Rockies bullpen, which saw Zach Agnos run out of gas when he allowed five-consecutive Blue Jays to reach base in the seventh inning, with three scoring as Toronto pulled away for a 5-1 win that dropped Colorado to 1-4.

The sum total of Colorado’s offense came from catcher Hunter Goodman, who launched a 435-foot shot off Max Scherzer into the second deck of the left-field stands to pull the Rox back within 2-1 in the sixth inning. The homer was his first of the season and continued his strong start to the season; he’s hitting .350 through five games.

But the Rox failed to generate many chances, with only four Rockies coming to bat with a runner in scoring position. It was particularly vexing coming one night after the offense finally erupted for a 14-run explosion in the team’s first win of the season.

ROCKIES STARTER’S REPORT

Ryan Feltner was cruising along in the third inning. Eight up and eight down with four strikeouts to open the game, he was on pace to do what no Rockies starter has done so far this season: make it into the sixth inning.

Then a 106-MPH line drive rifled off Andrés Giménez’s bat and drilled him. He labored through two more batters, hobbled back to the dugout and was done, diagnosed with a right glute contusion.

Thus ended the most impressive — but shortest — start of the season so far after just 47 pitches. Juan Mejia relieved him and took the loss.

BITS AND PIECES

IT WAS DECIDED FOR THE ROCKIES WHEN: Ernie Clement golfed a double off the left-field wall to score Nathan Lukes from first with two outs in the seventh, extending the Blue Jays’ lead to the final 5-1 margin.

NUMBER TO NOTE: 5 — Number of Rockies in Tuesday’s lineup with an OPS below .575, as more than half of the offense’s 22 runs — 14 — came Monday night.

WHAT’S NEXT: Kyle Freeland makes his second start of the season. Grandview H.S. product Kevin Gausman gets the call for Toronto as Colorado’s road trip concludes. First pitch is at 11:07 a.m. MDT.
