The White Sox designated Paez for assignment Wednesday.
Chicago will replace Paez on the 40-man roster and in the bullpen with right-hander Lucas Sims, who was called up from Triple-A Charlotte. Since Paez was a Rule 5 Draft selection over the winter, the White Sox will have to offer him back to the Red Sox if he goes unclaimed off waivers. The 22-year-old righty made relief appearances in three of the White Sox’s first five games, allowing six earned runs on four hits and three walks while striking out two batters over three innings.
