The Toronto Blue Jays just suffered another big injury to their rotation with Cody Ponce, who was just sent to the IL after spraining his ACL, and is now considering surgery. This now makes Toronto have four starters on the IL in Ponce, Jose Berrios, Shane Bieber, and Trey Yesavage.
While they could look internally, no one is up to par. FanSided’s Zachary Rotman believes so as well, and predicts the Jays could go out and sign All-Star ace Lucas Giolito.
“Easily the most appealing free agent left is Lucas Giolito, who Jays fans know well given the fact that he spent the 2025 season in the AL East with the Boston Red Sox…His advanced metrics weren’t nearly as good as the ERA would indicate, but the Jays don’t need him to be a savior of any sort. Ensuring they have a reliable back-end arm who can soak up some innings is what’s most important, and Giolito, even at his worst, can do just that,” Rotman wrote.
This past season, Giolito posted a 10-4 record, a 3.41 ERA, 121 Ks, and a WHIP of 1.290 over 145 innings pitched. He wins games more often than not, and has a decent ERA, which would make for a fine middle-to-end of rotation starter.
As for a contract, Giolito’s projected to receive a three-year, $61 million deal. However, considering it’s a week into the season, and there’s no smoke around his market, the Blue Jays could just offer him a rental deal, and more likely than not, he’d take it.
Hopefully, the Jays make an offer soon, or another injury-ridden team could have the same idea.
