Baseball outfielder Teoscar Hernandez was placed by The Los Angeles Dodgers on the 10 day injured list (IL) on Tuesday (May 06) with a Grade 1 groin strain, sidelining one of their most productive hitters for an undetermined period. Hernandez exited Monday’s (May 05) series opener against the Miami Marlins after the third inning, initially reported as suffering from left hamstring tightness. An MRI on Tuesday revealed the groin strain, prompting the IL move.
“He doesn’t come out of baseball games, so we put him on the IL,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said before Tuesday’s game in Miami. “Obviously, he’s going to be inactive for a while. I don’t really know what timetable.”
The injury occurred when Hernandez chased down a fly ball hit by Javier Sanoja in the gap during the third inning. He was replaced in the lineup by Chris Taylor the following inning. At the time of the injury, the 32-year-old was batting a team-best .315, leading the Dodgers with 34 RBIs and tied for the team lead in home runs (nine) alongside Shohei Ohtani.
“It’s certainly weeks but I don’t know how long. He’s had a huge impact. Without Teo, you try to balance out the lineup. I think it’s going to be more of a platoon-paced roster right now. And we’ll go from there, ” Roberts on Hernandez’s return.
In response, the Dodgers recalled outfielder James Outman from Triple-A Oklahoma City. Outman, who finished third in NL Rookie of the Year voting last season, will start in center field and bat eighth. He hit 23 home runs with 70 RBIs in 2023 but struggled to start this season, hitting .147 over 53 games and eventually being optioned to the minors. “It’s up to him to go out there and relax and know that you can be comfortable in this environment and be free and go play,” said Roberts.
Hernandez is the second key Dodgers position player to hit the IL this season, joining Tommy Edman, who had been off to a strong start before being sidelined with right ankle inflammation. The Dodgers also made additional roster moves Tuesday, recalling right-handed reliever J.P. Feyereisen and designating Yoendrys Gomez for assignment.
