Tigers put the Cardinals away in the opener
The Detroit Tigers didn’t seem worried Friday before the home opener at Comerica Park after returning from a west coast road trip with a 2-4 record and a four-game losing streak.
It showed.
The Tigers beat the St. Louis Cardinals 4-0 on a sunny, pleasant day, thanks to ace pitcher Framber Valdez, who gave up only three hits and no runs in six innings, and a bullpen that contributed to the shutout before a sold-out crowd.
Catcher Dillon Dingler hit a two-run homer, his second of the season. Kerry Carpenter, Riley Greene and Javy Báez had two hits each.
“There is such a good feel in this ballpark when our fans are into it,” manager A.J. Hinch said, according to The Detroit News. “I’m glad a lot of new guys got to feel it. And we came out with a good game. Just proud of our guys, especially after a long trip, including the spring. Feeling the vibe in the city and being able to produce a good game is pretty cool.”
