The New York Yankees began their first homestead of the season with a comfortable six-run victory over the Miami Marlins.

Momentum was on New York’s side until the bullpen began to falter. It started in the middle game after Ryan Weathers served up three earned runs and six hits to his former team. Camilo Doval would give up the next two runs before David Bednar allowed a run to score in the ninth. Luckily for the Yankees, Bednar was able to hold off Miami’s offense long enough to escape with the 9-7 victory. But the Bronx Bombers did not have good fortune in the series finale.

Ace Max Fried gave up three runs and five hits in 6.2 innings of work on Sunday in his most difficult start to date this season, but relievers Jake Bird and Ryan Yarbrough allowed run-scoring hits in the eighth inning to create a hole too large for the Yankees to crawl out of in a 9-7 loss.

Nursing a 4-3 lead one out and one on in the eighth, Bird walked Otto Lopez, hit pinch-hitter Griffin Conine, and yielded a two-run double to pinch-hitter Graham Pauley. Yarbrough then gave up a two-run single to Xavier Edwards to put New York down 7-4.

With a 7-2 record, the Yankees have been able to string three straight series wins. The lineup has consistently put runs across the board, while the bullpen has been heavily relied upon. The unit allowed just three runs in the first six games against the Giants and Marines.

So a day off before another three games at Yankee Stadium against the Athletics should give them a chance to rebound.

Additionally, Cam Schlittler will start in the series opener. The 25-year-old right-hander has been at the top of the Yankees’ rotation, winning his first two starts with 15 strikeouts and not allowing a run to score.

If Schlittler can have a successful third start, this can give the bullpen something to rally behind going into another three-game stretch against the Athletics. Will Warren and Weathers will take the mound in the next two games, who have both won their first two starts.
